Kirkcaldy

Seaport on the north side of the Firth of Forth, Fife, Scotland, 24 km/15 mi north of Edinburgh across the Forth; population (2001) 46,900. Industries include the manufacture of linoleum, paper, and whisky. It is the birthplace of the economist Adam Smith (1723) and where he retired to write his treatise The Wealth of Nations. It is also the birthplace of the architect Robert Adam.

The town has been called ‘Lang Toun’; its main street is about 6 km/4 mi long. Every April it hosts the Links Market, reputed to be the longest street fair in Europe.
