Kirksville

City and administrative headquarters of Adair County, northeastern Missouri, 115 km/72 mi northwest of Hannibal; population (1990) 17,200. It is a manufacturing and processing centre in an agricultural, dairy farming, and coalmining area. Products include shoes, electrical appliances, clothing, and hospital equipment.

It is the seat of Northeast Missouri State University (1867) and Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (1892), established as the world's first college of osteopathy by the founder of osteopathy, Dr Andrew Taylor Still.
