Kirnberger, Johann Philipp

    0.02 sec.

Kirnberger, Johann Philipp (1721–1783)

German theorist and composer. He was a pupil of Johann Sebastian Bach in Leipzig 1739–41. After various posts, he entered the service of Frederick the Great as a violinist in 1751. Appointed Kapellmeister and teacher of composition to Princess Amalia of Prussia in 1758, he increasingly abandoned performance and composition to devote his time to theoretical writings. Among many treatises the most important is Die Kunst des reinen Satzes, in which he promoted the conservative musical values of Bach. His compositions include cantatas, motets, and instrumental music.
