Kirov, Sergei Mironovich (1886–1934)

Russian Bolshevik leader who joined the party in 1904 and played a prominent part in the 1918–20 civil war. As one of Stalin's closest associates, he became first secretary of the Leningrad Communist Party. His assassination, possibly engineered by Stalin, led to the political trials held during the next four years as part of the purge.
