Kirov

Oblast (region) in the western Russian Federation; area 120,800 sq km/46,641 sq mi; population (1996) 1,634,000 (70% urban). The capital is Kirov, and Nolinsk and Omutninsk are other cities. The region is located in the basin of the River Vyatka, the main tributary of the Kama, and comprises rolling plains partly covered with forests and marshes. Iron-ore and peat deposits are found in the reigion. Industries include engineering, metalworking, petrochemical, and electrical industries, and dairy farming.
