Former name, from 1935 to 2001, of the Meriinsky Ballet company, founded and based in St Petersburg, Russia.

Golden Masks, which are awarded annually for the best stage performances in Russia, were given to John Neumeier, for his Midsummer Night's Dream for the Bolshoi Ballet, and David Dawson, former principal with Ballett Frankfurt and resident choreographer for Dresden Semperoper Ballet, for the choreography of Reverance, created for the Kirov Ballet.
Well, after producing and starring in The End of Silence (2005), an independent film that has been bought and released by Blockbuster in Canada, the former Kirov Ballet and ABT member is back on the ballet scene in a major way.
When Russia's esteemed Kirov Ballet leaps onto the stage of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion next week, it's the only time you'll see tutus during the 2005-06 season of Dance at the Music Center.
