Kirovograd

City in central Ukraine on the Ingul River, capital of an oblast of the same name; population (2001) 254,100. Kirovograd lies some 250 km/155 mi southeast of Kiev. Manufacturing industries in the city include the production of agricultural machinery and food processing. The city is situated on a large lignite (brown coal) field.

Kirovograd was founded in 1761 as Elizavetgrad. It was known as Zinovyevsk (1924–36), and Kirovo (1936–39).
