Kiryas Joel

Residential community in Monroe town, southeastern New York State, 64 km/40 mi northwest of New York City; population (1990) 7,400. It was established in 1977 by Orthodox (Satmar) Jews from Brooklyn.

Kiryas Joel was in the national spotlight in the early 1990s as courts considered the legality of state support for religious school systems.
