Kisangani

Capital of Haut-Zaire Province, northeast Democratic Republic of Congo, on the upper Congo River, below Stanley Falls; population (2004 est) 682,600. It is a communications centre and strategic river city. Agricultural products include maize, millet, sorghum, cassava, plantains, and sweet potatoes. Industries include port activities, textiles, and food processing.

The settlement was established in 1883 at the head of the long navigable section of the Congo River, and soon became a trade centre of a wide area. Kisangani was a temporary home for more than 80,000 refugees fleeing the Rwandan civil war 1996–97, and a centre of fighting in the Zairean civil war.
