Kishi, Nobusuke (1896–1987)

Japanese right-wing politician and prime minister 1957–60. A government minister during World War II and imprisoned in 1945, he was never put on trial and returned to politics in 1953. During his premiership, Japan began a substantial rearmament programme and signed a security treaty with the USA that gave rise to massive protests both in the Diet (parliament) and on the streets.
