Waxman's grandparents fled Russia shortly after the 1905 pogroms in Kishinev.
The senior author was born Wolfe Friedmann in Kishinev, Russia in 1891 and ultimately became known as the Father of American Cryptanalysis.
In 1903, after the Kishinev pogrom, he advocated strong alliances with wealthier Jews for the purpose of aiding immigration to the US.
