Kissimmee

City and administrative headquarters of Osceola County, central Florida, on the northern shore of Lake Tohopekaliga, 26 km/16 mi south of Orlando; population (1990) 30,100. The city retains much of its historic flavour, with many older structures preserved. Tourism is its major industry, driven by the proximity of Orlando and of Epcot Center and Walt Disney World (16 km/10 mi to the northwest), and by its own lakefront and other amusements.

It is also a trade centre for the cattle-producing Kissimmee Prairies and for neighbouring citrus groves, supplemented by boatbuilding and plastics manufacturing.

The city grew around an early trading post, sugar plantation, and lumber camp, beginning its major development in the early 1880s and quickly evolving into a regional trade centre.
