Kitimat

Seaport in Kitimat-Stikine Regional District, west-central British Columbia, Canada; population (1991) 11,300. It is located 110 km/70 mi southeast of Prince Rupert at the head of Douglas Channel. It is the site of a huge aluminium smelter, accessible to vessels bringing ore from the Caribbean. It receives hydroelectric power from a plant at Kemano, 72 km/45 mi to the south-southeast.

Kitimat was founded by an aluminium company in 1953; although known as the ‘Aluminum City’, the town also manufactures paper, methanol, and other products. Kitimat was named after a local tribe who traded here in the 1830s with the Hudson's Bay Company.
