Kitt, Eartha

Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.01 sec.

Kitt, Eartha (Mae) (1927– )

US singer. Originally a dancer with the Katherine Dunham troupe, she stayed in Paris, France, after a tour and gained a reputation as a club singer. Returning to Broadway in 1952, she lent her catlike voice and demeanour to a number of stage and film roles over the next 30 years but her mannered style made her an exotic.

Kitt was born in South Carolina.
