Kittery| Town in southern Maine, on the Atlantic coast at the mouth of the Piscataqua River, across from Portsmouth, New Hampshire; population (1990) 9,400. Despite its name, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (1806) is here, spread over several islands in the river. Pleasure boats and wood products are also manufactured. |
| Kittery produced John Paul Jones's Ranger, the Civil War Kearsarge, submarines for both world wars, the first atomic-powered ship, and the first Polaris missile-launching submarine. There is a US naval prison here. |
