Kitzinger, Ernst

Kitzinger, Ernst (1912-2003)

German-born US art historian. He specialized in early Christian, Byzantine, and early medieval art. He taught at Harvard University (from 1979). He also taught at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (1966-67, 1980, 1982). Kitzinger was born in Munich, Germany. He studied at the University of Rome, Italy (1931-32), the University of Munich, Germany, where he gained his PhD in 1934, and at Swarthmore College, Pennsylvania, where he earned a DLitt in 1969. He worked in England at the British Museum (1935-40), then emigrated to the USA in 1941.
