Longest river in Turkey; length 1,182 km/739 mi. Rising in eastern Anatolia, it flows to the west before turning north through the Pontic Mountains to reach the Black Sea.

Minister Eker was approached by Omer Soysal (96) after coming to Cankiri's Kizilirmak town to mark the beginning of the harvesting season for rice and to inaugurate two new factories.
Three of the longest rivers in Turkey, the Yesilirmak, Kizilirmak, and Sakarya all lead into the Black Sea.
Measured using the river basin data, the highest number of dams are concentrated on the Yangtze in China, La Plata basin in South America, Tigris and Euphrates in the Middle East, Salween in South-East Asia, Kizilirmak in Turkey, and the Ganges basin in India (WWF 2004: 4).
