Kléber, Jean-Baptiste

    0.04 sec.

Kléber, Jean-Baptiste (1753-1800)

French general who fought with distinction in the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars.

Kléber was born in Strasbourg, Alsace. He studied at the military academy in Munich, and served in the Austrian army 1776-82. From 1783 he practised in France as an architect. In 1792 he enlisted in the National Guard, and after taking part in the defence of Mainz was promoted to brigadier-general. He took part in the victories over the Austrians at Fleurus (1794) and Altenkirchen (1796); the latter victory is largely ascribed to his skill. He accompanied Bonaparte to Egypt, and was left in command when Bonaparte returned. In 1800 he recaptured Cairo, but was assassinated by a Turkish fanatic during treaty negotiations.
