Kleiber, Carlos (1930–2004)

Argentine-born Austrian conductor, the son of Erich Kleiber, who advised him against a career in music. He first achieved wide recognition in 1974, when he conducted Der Rosenkavalier at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, England, and Tristan und Isolde at Bayreuth, Germany.

He studied in Buenos Aires and after early experience in Munich, Berlin, and Zürich, he was engaged at Stuttgart, Germany, in 1966. He made his US debut at San Francisco in 1977, with Otello. He became an Austrian citizen in 1980. He conducted the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 1982 and made his New York Metropolitan debut in 1988, with La Bohème. Recordings include Der Freischütz and Tristan und Isolde, with the Dresden Staatskapelle.
