Kleist, (Paul Ludwig) Ewald von (1881–1954)

German field marshal. Commissioned into the cavalry 1902, he was a lieutenant-general by 1935 and retired 1938. He was recalled 1939 and given command of XXII Army Corps in Poland, then led Panzer Group Kleist in France 1940. He then led 1 Panzer Group in the Balkans and 1 Panzer Army in the invasion of the USSR. Promoted to field marshal November 1942, he commanded Army Group A in the Ukraine. He retired for the second time 30 March 1944, but when the Soviets occupied Germany he was captured and remained a prisoner until he died.
