Klondike) Gold dust was legal tender for purchases during the Alaska Gold Rush; Dawson City, Klondike, Alaska, 1899. Over 100,000 people from around the world stampeded towards the Yukon in 1898, propelled by dreams of gold. Some 60,000 died on the arduous journey to Dawson City. Former gold-mining area in northwest Yukon Territory, Canada, near Dawson, where the Klondike and Yukon rivers meet. It is named after the river valley (length 193 km/120 mi) near where gold was found in August 1896. By 1898, at the height of the ‘Klondike Gold Rush’, over 30,000 people had moved temporarily into the area. The gold was first discovered in 1896 in Bonanza Creek, a tributary of the Klondike River; by 1900, over $22 million worth of gold had been mined in the area. Gold production ended here in 1966. |
