Knight, Gillian (1939– )

English mezzo-soprano. She studied at Royal Academy of Music, London and sang with D'Oyly Carte Opera 1959–64. She worked with Sadler's Wells/the English National Opera from 1968 (as Ragonde in Le Comte Ory, Juno in Semele, and Carmen), and at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London from 1970 as Erda, Herodias, and Carmen. She was involved in the first performances of Taverner (1972) and We Come to the River (1976). In 1979 she sang Olga at the Tanglewood Festival, USA (her US debut) and the nurse in Die Frau ohne Schatten at the Welsh National Opera. She sang Grimgerde in Die Walküre in 1994.
