Knopoff, Leon (1925– )

US geophysicist. A professor of physics (from 1955) and research musicology (from 1961) at the University of California, Los Angeles, he combined knowledge of wave behaviour gained from both fields to make a major contribution to the study of wave propagation, the acoustics of solids, seismology, and the physicochemical structure of the earth's interior. Knopoff was born in Los Angeles, California.
