Knorr, Iwan (1853-1916)

German composer and teacher. He studied at the Leipzig Conservatory after having lived in small Russian towns 1857-68. He returned to Russia and became professor at Kharkov in 1874, but settled finally in Frankfurt in 1883, where he became director of the Hoch Conservatory in 1908. He had a number of English pupils, including Cyril Scott and Henry Balfour Gardiner. His compositions include vocal, orchestral, and chamber works.

operas Dunja (1904), Die Hochzeit (1907), and Durchs Fenster (1908); Ukrainian Love-Songs for vocal quartet and piano; songs.

Instrumental

piano quartets; variations on a theme by Schumann for piano trio; piano works for two and four hands.
