Knorr, Iwan

Knorr, Iwan (1853–1916)

German composer and teacher. He studied at the Leipzig Conservatory after having lived in small Russian towns 1857–68. He returned to Russia and became professor at Kharkov in 1874, but settled finally in Frankfurt in 1883, where he became director of the Hoch Conservatory in 1908. He had a number of English pupils, including Cyril Scott and Henry Balfour Gardiner. His compositions include vocal, orchestral, and chamber works.

operas Dunja (1904), Die Hochzeit (1907), and Durchs Fenster (1908); Ukrainian Love-Songs for vocal quartet and piano; songs.

Instrumental

piano quartets; variations on a theme by Schumann for piano trio; piano works for two and four hands.
