Knott, Sarah Gertrude (1895-1984)

US folk festival organizer. She was the founding director of the National Folk Festival, the first of which was held in St Louis, Missouri, in 1934. Until her retirement in 1970, she was the moving force behind the festival, and also participated in the creation of many other organizations and events that showcased the folk cultures of the USA and foreign lands.

Knott was born in Kevil, Kentucky. She attended drama schools in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Chicago, Illinois, and organized community theatre groups in North Carolina, where she had worked under Frederick Koch and Paul Green, and in St Louis, Missouri.
