Knussen, (Stuart) Oliver (1952– )

English composer and conductor. An eclectic and prolific composer, his works include the operas Where the Wild Things Are (1983), based on the children's story by Maurice Sendak, and Higglety Pigglety Pop! (1984–90).

He studied in the USA with Gunter Schuller.

Opera

Where the Wild Things Are (1983) and Higglety Pigglety Pop! (1984–90; produced at Glyndebourne).

Orchestral

three symphonies (1966–79), concerto for orchestra (1970), Coursing for chamber orchestra (1979), Chiara for orchestra (1986).

Vocal

Hums and Songs of Winnie-the-Pooh for soprano and ensemble (1970–83), Trumpets for soprano and three clarinets (1975), Late Poems and an Epigram of Rainer Maria Rilke for soprano (1988), Whitman Settings for soprano and orchestra (1991).

Piano and instrumental

Sonya's Lullaby for piano (1978), Variations for piano (1989); Songs Without Voices for eight instruments (1992).
