Knuth, Donald E(rvin) (1938– )

US computer science professor. A National Academy of Sciences member, he specialized in algorithms, programming languages, digital typography, and history of computer science. A professor of computer science and electrical engineering at Stanford University (from 1977), he also served as a consultant to Burroughs Corp (1968–69). Knuth was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
