Knysna

Harbour town and popular tourist centre in Western Cape province, South Africa, 222 km/138 mi west of Port Elizabeth on the Garden Route from Cape Town; population (2001 est) 33,700. Knysna has forests which still contain the rare stinkwood tree, a hardwood valued for furniture. The town has important wood-working industries.

Alluvial gold found at nearby Millwood has long been exhausted.
