Koffler, Józef (1896–1943)

Polish composer. After studying with Arnold Schoenberg, he began to cultivate the 12-note system, the first Polish composer to do so. Later he became professor at the Lviv State Conservatory, but was killed during a Nazi roundup of Jews near Kraków.

He studied composition with Hermann Theodor Otto Grädener (1844–1929) and musicology with Guido Adler (1855–1941) in Vienna, Austria.

three symphonies (no. 3 performed London, 1938) and Polish Suite for orchestra; 15 variations for string orchestra.

Chamber

string quartet, string trio (performed Oxford, 1931).

Vocal

cantata Die Liebe for voices, viola, cello, and clarinet; four poems for voice and piano.

Piano

Musique de ballet (1927), Musique quasi una sonata, sonatina, and other pieces; 40 Polish Folksongs.
