Kohat

Town in the North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan, to the north of the Kohat Toi River; population (2001 est) 135,300. It lies 60 km/37 mi south of Peshawar through the Kohat Pass, near the Kurram Pass into Afghanistan. The local economy is based on agriculture and manufacturing textiles, loincloths, turbans, shoes, and leather goods. The development of the modern town was increased by the opening of a military road through the Kohat Pass in 1901.

Now part of the region occupied by the Pathan (Pashtun) people, it was formerly the centre for the Afridi people. The town has a government college affiliated to the University of Peshawar, and is linked by rail with Thal.
