Koidu

Mining town in the region of Yengema, eastern Sierra Leone, 300 km/186 mi east of Freetown in ; population (2001 est) 109,900. Much of Sierra Leone's wealth of diamonds is mined from alluvial deposits in the area. Civil unrest since the 1990s has not affected the mining activity. Cassava and kola nuts are grown locally.
