Kolar

Town of Karnataka state, southern India, 70 km/43 mi east of Bangalore; population (1991) 156,400. The nearby Kolar goldfields produce almost all India's gold output, and contain the deepest mines in the world. They cover an area of 35 sq km/13.5 sq mi, and the deepest mine is 899 m/2,950 ft. The mines were first worked in 1881, but are now much depleted.
