Kompong Cham

Town and province of central Cambodia, 60 km/37 mi northeast of Phnom Penh near the Mekong River; population (2001 est) town 53,800, province 1,768,400. Rubber is the principal crop of the region, grown in the well-drained, red volcanic soil. There are rubber factories, textile industries, and distilleries in the town. It was an important trading post during the French colonial period.
