Komsomolsk-na-Amure

City in Khabarovsk krai (territory) of the Russian Far East, situated on the River Amur; population (2002) 281,000. Komsomolsk, as the city is usually called, lies 260 km/162 mi northeast of Khabarovsk, and is an important industrial centre, manufacturing iron and steel, ships, wood-pulp and paper products, and engineering goods. Oil is piped here from Sakhalin Island, across the Tatar Strait. The city is served by the Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM) railway, an extension of the Trans-Siberian Railway.

Komsomolosk was founded on a swampy forest site in 1932; its name derives from the fact that it was partly built and populated by members of the Young Communist League (Komsomol). The city has suffered a severe economic downturn since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
