Kornilov, Lavr Georgyevich (1870-1918)

Russian general, commander-in-chief of the army, who in August 1917 launched an attempted coup, backed by officers, against the revolutionary prime minister, Kerensky. The coup failed, but brought down the provisional government, clearing the way for the Bolsheviks to seize power.
