Korsakov

Town on the island of Sakhalin, in the Russian Far East, 40 km/25 mi south of the capital Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk; population (2001 est) 35,700. Korsakov is the principal port on the island. The main economic activities are fishing and saw milling. A ferry runs from here to Wakkanei on the tip of the northernmost Japanese island of Hokkaido.

Korsakov was founded by Russians in 1876, but became a Japanese fortress in 1905, after their comprehensive defeat of Russia in the Russo-Japanese War. It reverted to Russian ownership, along with the rest of the southern part of the island, in 1945.
