Kościuszko, Tadeusz Andrzej (1746-1817)

Polish general and nationalist. He served with George Washington in the American Revolution (1776-83). He returned to Poland in 1784, fought against the Russian invasion that ended in the partition of Poland, and withdrew to Saxony. He returned again in 1794 to lead the revolt against the occupation, but was defeated by combined Russian and Prussian forces and imprisoned until 1796.
