Kossuth, Lajos (1802-1894)

Hungarian nationalist and leader of the revolution of 1848. He proclaimed Hungary's independence of Habsburg rule, became governor of a Hungarian republic in 1849, and, when it was defeated by Austria and Russia, fled first to Turkey and then to exile in Britain and Italy.
