Kostelanetz, André (1901-1980)

Russian-born US conductor. After study in Petrograd he emigrated to the USA, and worked for CBS from 1930 as a conductor and arranger. His versions of the popular classics, in the manner of film music, found favour in his adopted homeland: more serious work was commissioned from William Schuman, Walton and Copland (Lincoln Portrait). He married Lily Pons in 1938.
