Kostroma

Oblast (region) in the western Russian Federation; area 60,100 sq km/23,205 sq mi; population (1996) 806,000 (66% urban). The capital is Kostroma and Buy is another town. The region is situated northeast of Moscow and north of the River Volga in an extensively forested plateau region. Industries include textile manufacture (especially linen), lumbering, and wood processing, and traditional handicrafts; flax growing and dairy farming.
