Kotor

Port in Montenegro, at the head of the Gulf of Kotor; population (1991 est) 36,700. It has been a naval base since Roman times. The town is situated at the foot of a cliff, facing the 32 km/20 mi gulf, surrounded by mountains.

Once the capital of a small independent state, it joined the Venetian republic in 1420 and was ceded to Austria in 1814 by the Congress of Vienna. In 1919 it was given to Yugoslavia.

As NATO planes flew over from Italy several blasts were heard in the area of Kotor Bay, where the headquarters of the Yugoslav Navy is located.
In a joint declaration signed in Geneva on 30 September, President Franjo Tudiman of Croatia and President Dobrica Cosic of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia had fixed 20 October as the date for JNA's withdrawal from the Previaka peninsula, a significant step towards improving security in the regions of Dubrovnik and Kotor Bay.
