Kotzebue, August Friedrich Ferdinand von

    0.01 sec.

Kotzebue, August Friedrich Ferdinand von (1761-1819)

German dramatist. His sprightly, commercial plays include Menschenhass und Reue/The Stranger 1789, Die Spanier in Peru/Pizarro 1799, and Die Bieden Klingsberg/Father and Son 1801.

Kotzebue was also a prolific writer of satires, tales, and historical works. A great controversialist, he attacked Goethe as well as leaders of the Romantic school. In particular he ridiculed the Burschenschaft (student nationalist) movement, for which he was killed by a student from Jena.
