Kotzebue, Otto von

Kotzebue, Otto von (1787–1846)

German explorer, born in Reval (now Tallinn in Estonia). He accompanied the Russian admiral Baron von Krusenstern (1770–1846) round the world in 1803–06 and made two prolonged voyages to the Pacific. On the first (1815–17) he was the first European to visit the Suvorov and Krusenstern Islands and Kotzebue Sound; on the second (1823–26) he visited the islands of the Sandwich, Philippine, and Samoan groups. He wrote A Voyage of Discovery into the South Sea (translated 1821), and A New Voyage round the World (translated 1830).
