Kraft, Anton (1749-1820)

Bohemian cellist and composer. Beethoven's Triple Concerto was composed for him, and he played in the first performance of Beethoven's seventh symphony in 1813. Haydn's D major cello concerto was once ascribed to Kraft.

Originally intended for a career in law, he was engaged by Prince Esterházy as principal cellist in 1778, remaining until 1790 and receiving tuition in composition from Haydn. He was subsequently in the service of Prince Grassalkovich and (from 1795) Prince Lobkowitz.

concertos, sonatas, and other pieces for cello, duets for two cellos.
