Krainik, Ardis (1929- )

US director and administrator. He studied at Northwestern University and sang sub-principal roles with the Chicago Lyric Opera 1954-59, became artistic administrator there in 1975, and general director in 1981. He has presided over recent productions of Alceste, with Jessye Norman (1990), a Ring cycle conducted by Zubin Mehta, the first major US staging of Prokofiev's The Gambler (1991), and the premiere of Bolcom's McTeague (1992).
