Kramer, Paul J(ackson) (1903–1995)

US plant physiologist. A pioneer in the physiology of woody plants, especially of the southern USA, he made a major contribution to the study of the relationship between plants and water, including investigations of transpiration and salt transfer, root structure, and water stress, both in nature and in the controlled environment known as the phytotron. Kramer was born in Brookville, Indiana. He was an assistant botanist at Ohio State University (1928–31), then moved to Duke University (1931–74), continuing his research and writing after retirement.
