Krauss, Clemens (1893-1954)

Austrian conductor. From 1912 he conducted at several opera houses in Germany and Austria, including Vienna and Berlin. He was closely associated with Richard Strauss, both as a conductor, and in the case of Capriccio, as joint librettist; he conducted the first performances of Arabella, Friedenstag, and Die Liebe der Danae.

Krauss studied with Hermann Theodor Otto Grädener (1844-1929) and Richard Heuberger at the Vienna Conservatory. In 1922 he became conductor at the Vienna Staatsoper and in 1924 opera intendant and conductor of the Museum concerts in Frankfurt. He was director of the Vienna Staatsoper 1929-34 and the Berlin Staatsoper 1934-36, after which he directed the Opera at Munich. He married the singer Viorica Ursuleac (1894-1985).
