Kremenchuk

Industrial city on the River Dnieper, in the Poltava oblast in central Ukraine; population (1990) 238,000. Kremenchuk lies some 130 km/81 mi northwest of Dnipropetrovs'k. There is a large hydroelectric installation near the city that supplies energy for its industries. Goods manufactured in Kremenchuk include road-building machinery, railway wagons, petrochemical products, and processed food. The city suffered extensive damage during World War II.

Kremenchuk was founded in 1571 and was successively under Polish and Cossack rule until the 18th century, when it came under the control of the Russian Empire.
