Kremer, Gidon (1947– )

Russian violinist. He studied with David Oistrakh at the Moscow Conservatory and won the 1970 Tchaikovsky Competition. He has an international career and a wide repertory. He champions contemporary music and has performed works by Schnittke, Bernstein (whose Serenade he gave in London in 1986), Berg (whose concerto he has performed under Carl Davis), and Gubaidulina (whose Offertorium he performed at the 1991 London Prom concerts). His partner for duo recitals is the pianist Martha Argerich, with whom he has performed works by Franck, Schumann, Bartók, and Beethoven.
