Krems

Austrian town in the province of Lower Austria, on the River Danube; population (2001) 23,700. Wine and fruit are traded, and industries include the manufacture of leather goods and preserves. It has a 13th-century Dominican church (now a museum).

An Austrian musical ensemble specializing in paleolithic music recorded a CD entitled "Knochenklang: Sounds from the Stone Age" (Vienna: Verlag der Osterreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, 2000) featuring an "original" bone flute discovered at the Gudenus cave near Krems (about 16,000-10,000 BCE).
The Kremstal and the Kamptal were once considered a single region, called Kamptal-Donauland, which was divided in 1993 and renamed for the areas' respective rivers, the Krems and the Kamp.
